San Miguel de Tucuman, Argentina (January 3, 2011) – Last year’s edition of the Dakar Rally sent the teams to La Rioja from Cordoba, but today’s stage was new territory for the competitors of the Dakar Rally as the course headed to San Miguel de Tucuman instead.

Robby Gordon knew that the team would not have a strong showing in today’s stage due to the altitude changes and the varying terrain, but he didn’t think that today would end like it did. The No. 303 SPEED Energy / Toyo Tires HUMMER had a mechanical issue during today’s stage that required it to be stopped for repairs. As a result, Gordon finished 46th and is now 21st overall, 1 hour, 6 minutes and 55 seconds minutes behind the leaders in the overall standings.

“We were actually pretty good through the first few check points. One corner snuck up on me; I didn’t see it and just drove the SPEED Energy / Toyo Tires HUMMER off the road, hitting a large rock. This is very unfortunate for our team. Now that we are an hour behind heading into Chile versus only a few minutes, we definitely got our work cut out for us. I think we will be ok though; there is still plenty of racing left,” commented a very disappointed Robby Gordon. “The HUMMER sustained some damage on today’s stage as when we smashed the front of the race vehicle into the rock, and the transmission doesn’t have reverse because it broke when I tried to reverse out of my mistake. I would say that we were broke down for maybe an hour today…a very costly hour.”

Tomorrow, the third stage of the Dakar Rally, will traverse San Miguel de Tucuman to San Salvador de Jujuy. The special stage has been split into two parts for a total of 226 km.

CORDOBA, Argentina — Robby Gordon and Team Hummer completed the first stage of the Dakar Rally on Sunday in eighth place, covering the 138-mile course in 2 hours, 29 minutes, 36 seconds. Gordon and navigator Kellon Walch trail defending champion Carlos Sainz by 11:04.

Sainz’s Volkswagen was 1:31 ahead of second-place Stephane Peterhansel in a BMW and 2:16 in front of Volkswagen teammate Nasser Al Attiyah. American driver Mark Miller was fourth, 4:17 behind in another Volkswagen.

Gordon started fourth but dropped to ninth by the first marker as heavy rain created a slippery disadvantage as participants suffered from skidding and sliding.

Robby in 07 at Michigan; Speed Factory #8

Robby Gordon

Robby Gordon, and Robby Gordon Motorsports will perform a switcharoo this weekend at Michigan Speedway.  Instead of piloting his number 7 Speed Factory machine, he has instead entered himself driving the number 07.  The 07 is not locked into the show, however his 7 car is; going into Michigan 34th in owner points.  No word yet on primary sponsorship, but Gordon has listed PJ Jones on the entry blank to pilot the 7 car.

There has yet to be and explanation as to why Gordon is making this move, but I am speculating that this most likely is sponsor related, or could be an attempt to raise the 07 car in owner’s standings in a ploy to attract more sponsorship.

Speed Factory TV worth watching [Video]

Sometimes the marketing sponsorships on Nascar racecars really can work. While watching TV coverage on ESPN and Fox, I kept noticing Robby Gordon’s car, painted in the livery of his own web-based reality show, Speed Factory TV. The show is about him and his Robby Gordon Motorsports Nascar team as they go through the ups and downs of the Nascar circuit. Used to draw attention to his operation and perhaps more sponsorship, this is more than just a marketing ploy. It is a deep look into the day to day operations of a mid-pack Nascar team, something that most don’t get to see, and something that is truly worth watching.

If you have ever been a fan of similar reality shows like Nascar Drivers 360, NBS 24/7 or 7 Days, then you’ll like this show as well. Airing on Wednesdays, Speed Factory follows a format that recaps the week before, chronicles the lead up to the race weekend, and highlights the race itself, as seen from the point of view of Robby Gordon Motorsports. Throughout each episode, different crew memebers are featured, giving us the viewer more insight into the team. As you watch, you start be drawn into the show deeper, gaining a feeling of interest that makes you not only want the team to excel, but also makes you wish you were there.

Aside from Gordon himself, the stand out crew member episode to episode seems to be crew chief Gene Nead. This guy is really funny, and watching him has made me all the more a fan of RGM. In on hilarious exchange, crew members play a practical joke on Gene which leads to a fire alarm sounding, and a naked Gene answering his hotel room door to a shocked attendant.

As Speed Factory continues this season, expect to see the struggles and triumphs of the RGM crew and also expect to see deeper inside the people that make the team go. It’s a cross between a serious documentary and something more like American Chopper. For me, it’s good TV, and worth watching.
