Tightest Chase in Chase History

Clint Bowyer Celebrates Winning in Talladega

After an exciting finish, CLINT BOWYER wins at Talladega, with KEVIN HARVICK coming in 2nd. After a strong push by DAVID REUTIMANN, Harvick took his damaged car to the front leading the start of the final lap. Harvick was placed in the 2nd position after a front straight crash (AJ ALMENIDINGER flips) following Nascar scoring loop and video review.

My Pick for the Win, Joe Nemechek, led the first lap of the race, then fell backward.  Although he did not run up front, Nemechek ran a solid race until a late race tire failure sent him to the back of the field.  He did finish, in 27th.

Today’s race tightened an already tight three-way race between Johnson, who now leads Hamlin by 14 and Harvick by 38.  Jeff Gordon, now 207 points back, has a steep hill to climb in order to stay in contention.

The Chase Standings after Talladega:

  1. Jimmie Johnson  – Leader
  2. Denny Hamlin  - 14
  3. Kevin Harvick – 38
  4. Jeff Gordon – 207
  5. Kyle Busch – 230
  6. Carl Edwards -247
  7. Tony Stewart -317
  8. Matt Kenseth – 324
  9. Kurt Busch – 350
  10. Jeff Burton – 352
  11. Greg Biffle – 361
  12. Clint Bowyer -367

Pick for the Win – Talladega

Can anyone really, truly pick a winner for a restrictor plate race?  I don’t think so.  The current rules package creates such a level playing field that the driver starting last has the same chance to win has the driver starting from the pole.

Joe Nemecheck

Then there is the inevitable ”Big One”.  Normally, I try to base my pick on statistics and driver characteristics.  I look at that weekend’s practice sessions, and draw my picks based on what my gut feeling tells me.  This week, however, I think I am going to just roll the dice and see what comes up.  I am picking the Underdogs.  That’s right, the drivers that are outside the top 35 in owner’s points.  I would really love to see Joe Nemecheck or Michael McDowell steal one from the top of the heap.  I’m not crazy either.  It happened just a few ‘Dega races ago when Brad Keselowski beat Carl Edwards.  Qualifying showed that many of theses “Go or Go Homers” have the speed.  Now the only question is whether or not they can survive 500 miles and stay in contention.

Restrictor plate racing. Some of my favorite racing. What better place to take a Chase where the top two are separated by only six points? It’s Talledega baby! Here is Jimmy Joe with the preview.

Quick Picks – Talladega

Talladega, Home of the Big One.

This week I will be foregoing my quick picks.  Why?  Talladega it Nascar’s biggest crapshoot.  In my opinion, anyone can win.  As always, I will be pulling for Kyle Busch (my favorite) and the fleet of underdogs.

It looks like this week, that the fleet of underdogs will be lead by Michael Waltrip.  He will be racing in the number 55 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota for PRISM Motorsports.  This could be the ultimate upset, so he is my sentimental favorite.
Other than that, expect the obvious.  Expect Hendrick Motorsports to lead, and expect the BIG ONE at some point.  The rest, is a crapshoot.
