Chase Elliott

Fifteen-year-old Chase Elliott of Dawsonville, Georgia, has signed a multi-year development contract with Hendrick Motorsports. Elliott, the son of 1988 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Bill Elliott, will continue to compete for his family-owned team until he begins competing in NASCAR’s development series. Bill Elliott Racing, based in Dawsonville, Ga., will field Chevrolets with support from Hendrick Motorsports.

“The apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree with Chase,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports in a release. “I’ve always admired Bill’s ability in a race car and how he handled himself with the fans. I see those same traits in Chase, with his natural driving talent and an awareness of what he needs to do away from the track to be successful. He comes from a great racing family, and it shows.”

Dale Earhardt Jr. Needs More Seat Time [Bonus Video]

Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Over the past week, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kelly Earhhart Elledge, and JR Motorsports announced that Aric Almirola would be joining JRM to drive the number 88 car next season in the Nascar Nationwide Series. As Dale Jr, and JRM finalize the details for next season, there is still a lot of racing left in 2010. To finish out the season, Earnhardt will share time in the 88 car with other drivers; the possibility of Almirola is included. Next year, Earnhardt will share seat time in JRM’s second car, the number 7 GoDaddy.com Chevy, with Danica Patrick and Josh Wise.

You probably already knew all of that news, so what is my point? My point, is that Earnhardt Jr. will be racing more races in the Nationwide Series, starting this weekend at Bristol behind the wheel of the 88 car. This could prove to be the kick start that Dale needs to right the ship that is about to capsize in the Cup Series. I am a proponent of struggling drivers getting more seat time in any series they can in order to improve their overall performance. Dale Earhhardt Jr. in the Nationwide Series for more races is a good thing for himself, his sponsors, Nascar, and the Nascar Nation as a whole. More seats will be filled and more merchandise will be sold.

If, as I predict, Junior starts having more success in the Nationwide Series, I could pontificate him running some Truck Series races as well. Also, with success in the Nationwide Series, and a mountain of frustration growing at Hendrick Motorsports, I think it would be a safe bet to say that the momentum would carry up to the Cup Series. Wins in the Nationwide Series could parlay into wins in the Truck and Cup Series, and the salvaging of what has been yet another disastrous season.

This is all just speculation, but with a lot of educated guessing. What do you think? Will Dale Jr.’s Nationwide racing equal a resurgence in the Cup Series? What would you like to see Dale Earnhardt Junior do? Post your comments bellow.

Quick Picks – Talladega

Talladega, Home of the Big One.

This week I will be foregoing my quick picks.  Why?  Talladega it Nascar’s biggest crapshoot.  In my opinion, anyone can win.  As always, I will be pulling for Kyle Busch (my favorite) and the fleet of underdogs.

It looks like this week, that the fleet of underdogs will be lead by Michael Waltrip.  He will be racing in the number 55 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota for PRISM Motorsports.  This could be the ultimate upset, so he is my sentimental favorite.
Other than that, expect the obvious.  Expect Hendrick Motorsports to lead, and expect the BIG ONE at some point.  The rest, is a crapshoot.

Dale Jr. to RCR

A special Dale Jr. scheme from the DEI era.

The silly season is here.  In April.  Kasey Kahne has been given the credit as the first domino to fall, and now it is apparent that Kevin Harvick will be the final piece to the puzzle that will make up the 2011 cast of drivers.  I don’t think so.  I think that may fall with Dale Earnhardt Jr.

This is how I envision the players of next season’s driver lineup.
Kasey Kahne goes to the number 5 car early as Mark Martin moves to the number 25.  You say to yourself, “Daniel, there is a four team limit in Nascar.  How can that work?”  It works when you release Dale Earnhardt Jr. from Hendrick Motorsports.  The number 88 becomes the 25, and Earnhardt Jr. fans have to get yet another tattoo change.  With his release, Dale Jr. moves to the place where Nascar fans old and young would hope he would go and flourish:  Richard Childress Racing driving the famed number 3.
Putting Jr. in the number 3 allows RCR to gain him, keep Harvick should they prove able to resign him and elevate the unproductive performance from the Hendrick experiment and finally, give both Martin and Kahne a home for 2011 and beyond.
Sound crazy?  Maybe not so crazy.  As it stands, Earnhardt Jr., in association with RCR, HMS and Dale Earnhardt Inc. is working on a deal that will see Dale Jr. in a number 3 car for the July Daytona race for sponsor Wrangler.
Speaking of sponsors.  Who picks up the tab for all this.  RCR is a Coca Cola Team, and Hendrick is a Pepsi Team.  Dale Jr.’s current sponsor in Mountain Dew, a Pepsi product.  The move to RCR could mean that the Dew sponsorship goes away, perhaps to Kahne in the 5 car.  Dale Jr. could continue his relationship with the National Guard and Wrangler, much like his father did in the 1980′s, possibly to a championship.
Harvick, should he stay at RCR, could be the benefactor of Kahne leaving Richard Petty Motorsports and Budwieser.  The Bud sponsorship could go to RCR’s 29 car.  Better yet, Dale Jr. reunites with Budwieser, and Harvick drives a car sponsored by the National Guard.
I highly doubt any of this will happen the way I have laid it out, but isn’t it nice to dream? Can you imagine a red and black Bud 3 car driven by Dale Jr.?  I can.
