The sounds of the season will return to 5 Flags Speedway this Saturday, with the Annual ”Snowball Derby Preview” being the reason. This open test session will have race cars in all Divisions, including Super Late Model, Pro Late Model, Modifieds, Super Stock, Sportsman, and Bombers. The Grandstand gates will be wide open for free admission into Saturday’s practice. Food and beverages will be available on the turn 4 Party Deck, making for a great place to have a Saturday afternoon lunch outing.

For racers, the Pit Gates will open at 8:30am, and there will be a $15 per person admission charge. A full crew of 5 Flags Speedway officials will be on hand. The Sunoco Fuel station and the Hoosier Tire building will be open until 5pm. Pit concession stands will be open as well. This year’s preview was extended until 7pm in order for racers to be able to simulate both qualifying and race conditions. Entries continue to arrive for this year’s 43rd Annual Snowball Derby, scheduled for December 1st thru 5th.

Fans will be able to purchase reserve seats for the 43rd Annual Snowball Derby from 9am to 5pm on Saturday!

Snowball Derby Contender Chase Elliott Pit Stop [Video]

Chase Elliott, 2010 North Wilkesboro Victory Lane

I found inspiration in this edition of Derby Days in a random video of Chase Elliott and his Red Bull Racing team performing a pit stop at a USAR Pro Cup race in Bristol, TN.  Elliott is a contender to win the 43rd annual Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL this December.

The (almost) 15 year old son of Nascar legend Bill Elliott, Chase has winning blood coursing through his viens and the backing and knowledge of a Nascar Champion.  Elliott has taken that knowledge, and talent to the winner’ circle 12 times in 2010 including a win in the prestigious Winchester 400 and a very popular wins at North Wilkesboro and Rockingham Speedway.

His strong runs have culminated into three 2010 championships; The Blizzard Series, Miller Lite Series, and Gulf Coast Series.  Elliott also finished 7th overall in the USAR Pro Cup Series.

Going into the Snowball Derby weekend, Chase takes along with him the skill of a very talented crew.  Comprised of 2005 Snowball Derby driver Ricky Turner as his crew chief, and Snowball Derby champion crew chief Jim Barfield, Elliott can boast to having the best pit crews in the garage.

Last year, the 14 year old stand out driver became the youngest to qualify and race for the prestigious 300 lap event, finishing 7th.  This year, with momentum on his side and a season that any driver would drool over, the now “veteran” driver returns to compete against short track legends from around the country.  He is among the best because as his 2010 season has shown, he is one of the best.

Chase Elliott on the Verge of Winning Blizzard Championship

Chase Elliott

Chase Elliott

Friday Night. September 24th will be a very special evening at 5 Flags Speedway. 2 Championships will be decided. Rubber & Specialties will return as a race sponsor. And, The Krewe De Ya Ya’s will be on hand making sure everyone has a great time while raising funds for Breast Cancer Research.
The Blizzard Series finale usually provides the largest field of cars of the season, as drivers use this event as a final tune up for the Snowball Derby. Dawsonville, Ga. Driver Chase Elliott has a 29 point lead over Augie Grill in the Championship standings, while Bubba Pollard, Josh Hamner and Donnie Wilson are all within striking distance. Grill’s domination in the last 2 Blizzard events has certainly raised the bar for the rest of the competition, but, with the quality of cars and drivers expected for the Rubber & Specialties 100, it would come as no surprise to see someone answer the call.
Randy Thompson leads the Super Stock Division over Earl Polk, and may very well become the Division Champion just 1 year after achieving the same accolades in the Sportsman Division. The SS Championship Race will be 30 Laps and should draw a good field for the same reason as the Super Late Model Event, tuning up for the Derby. The Sportsman and Bombers will also be in action.
