Frank Kimmel Mobile Race Recap

MOBILE, Ala. (March 10, 2012) - Frank Kimmel had a strong showing at the inaugural Mobile Speedway weekend – with as high as pole-fastest practice speeds on the slick track, as well as running as high as third during the ARCA 200.  However, a late-race incident on lap 180, with a podium finish or potential Victory Lane visit in site – ended the No. 44 Ansell/Menards Toyota Camry team’s night early with an 18th place finishing position.

Kimmel took the green flag in the 11th position and quickly maneuvered through the field during the caution-laden race.  Communicating much of the race that he was tight center and loose off, the veteran driver progressed to the second position by lap 69.  Pitting for fuel, tires and an air pressure adjustment under caution at lap 80, he emerged in the 12th position to tackle the second half of the 200-lap race.

Even though he was communicating to the crew about being loose in the brakes, Kimmel powered through, logging the fastest laps of the race.  At lap 167 under the race’s sixth caution, the No. 44 pit crew expertly guided the best stop of the day – pushing a splash of fuel and four tires on, then getting their driver back out in sixth place.  By lap 180, Kimmel had wheeled back to the third spot and was eyeing his next move towards the checkered flag – when disaster struck.  The No. 22 car turned low into the left bumper going into the turn, spinning the 44.  After two pit stops to fix a flat left rear tire and extensive left front fender damage, Kimmel salvaged the unfortunate incident with an 18th place finish at the checkered flag.

“This is just a shame, we had such a great car here today in Mobile,” said Kimmel.  “Not only did all the guys work hard to get a new chassis ready, we just had the right horsepower and setup package.  I was ready to make a move and felt like we had a win here, and it’s a shame to take a spin.  It happens, it’s a big part of short track racing – but the positive is, they saw what we had today.  Everyone hopefully understands that we mean business this year, and we’ll just keep tackling these tracks one at a time.  I’m looking forward to getting to my home track of Salem next and see some hometown fans.”

IZOD INDYCAR World Championship in Las Vegas

By: IndyCar Press Release

The IZOD INDYCAR Series announces that the final race of the 2011 season will be October 16 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

MORE: $5 million bonus for win in Indy Car finale by outsider: The Izod IndyCar Series confirmed its 2011 season finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with an enticing twist: A $5 million reward to any driver from another series who can win the race. IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard says a selection committee would be created to select a group of five entrants from outside IndyCar, likely determined by mid-summer. A test session also will be held at Las Vegas, and Bernard singled out the series’ top teams — Penske Racing, Target Chip Ganassi Racing and Andretti Autosport — as prime candidates for offering rides to the interlopers. Bernard wouldn’t speculate on who might be interested in the proposition, but the race date was designed with NASCAR in mind. IndyCar will make its return to Las Vegas’ for the Oct. 16 race, which will be held at 3:30 p.m. ET. The Sprint Cup Series will race the night before at Charlotte, with the Bank of America 500 ending sometime between 11-11:30 p.m. in Concord, N.C. The Charlotte race is the fifth of 10 Chase for the Sprint Cup, which might dissuade many big names in Cup from participating because of focus on the title hunt. The obvious candidates would be former IndyCar drivers Robby Gordon, Tony Stewart, Sam Hornish Jr. and Juan Pablo Montoya. But Montoya has indicated no interest in racing Indy cars again, and Stewart has said he doesn’t want to do a one-off. Gordon and Hornish, however, might be interested in returning, and other veterans (such as Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch and Kasey Kahne) have admitted intrigue in the prospect.(Jayski via USA Today)(2-23-2010)

Team USA Takes Dakar Rally Win

BUENOS AIRES –  During the first 12 stages and 9000 kilometers of the Dakar Rally competition, Darren Skilton and Sue Mead have daily alternated driving and navigation duties.

For this final leg, excited and exhausted Mead took the wheel in Cordoba for Stage 13. It was another scorcher as they made their way to the Special, a 180-kilometer sprint to the finish.

“When I began looking into making this a reality 10 months ago, my greatest hope was just to just get here, to participate,” Mead said. “When we cleared Stage 12 in Cordoba and all the other Open Production cars were out, it sunk in. We could actually win our class.”

Recent rains left many sections of deep mud. In areas of higher ground, the searing austral sun had dried the track, and blinding silt became the issue.

The shock mount, which had broken during Stage 5 and received a field repair, detached itself from the Raptor’s frame again just 10 kilometers short of the finish line. Skilton crawled under and removed the shock in less than 10 minutes, allowing the team to continue of to a 40th place for the day.

Mead said, “I was turning 60 and really wanted to do something big. I’d navigated for Darren in the 2000 Dakar in Africa, an incredible experience. He knows what he is doing and I knew he had the know-how required to manage the team. As we completed each stage, as brutal as they were, we just rolled into the next. Before I knew it, we were more than half way done. So many others had broken down, crashed or dropped out, yet I began to think we could actually see the finish line. At that point our entire focus fell on keeping the Raptor in one piece and getting it back to Buenos Aires.”

From the earlier stages when the independent team, with just one support vehicle and a total of five people, was in 126th position, the team managed to move up the Dakar ladder to 110th, 95th, 65th and even 51st position overall. At the end of the day, they held 40th place overall, and pulled off a first place finish in the Open Production Class. With the team’s success, Mead, who is America’s first female driver of record at Dakar, also became first to achieve an automotive class victory.

The car in front of the finish line was the No. 320 VW Touareg piloted by Nasser Al-Attiyah of Qatar. Shortly behind were Giniel DeVillers and Carlos Sainz, also in VW Touaregs. America’s Mark Miller and co-pilot Ralph Pitchford pulled off a sixth place in the T1 Auto Class while California based motorcycle hotshots Quinn Cody and Jonah Street knocked off ninth and 12th, respectively.
