A member of a Nostalgia Funny Car drag racing team was seriously injured Sunday after being struck by debris from the dragster of NHRA Top Fuel driver Antron Brownduring a first-round elimination race in Chandler, Ariz.
The unidentified woman was taken by helicopter to Good Samaritan Medical Center for observation, an NHRA statement said. The incident at Firebird International Raceway occurred when Brown’s dragster went out of control during his elimination race against Troy Buff in the Arizona Nationals.
His car crossed the center lane and into the retaining wall, shattering it into segments with Brown’s rollcage compartment rolling several times before coming to a stop upside down.
Brown was shaken up and appeared unhurt but was transported to Chandler Medical Center for further examination.
“We’re racers and we race and I’m OK,” Brown said in a statement. “It all happened so quickly and I want to thank the NHRA Safety Safari for being there so quickly to help get me out of the car and also the track safety team for tending to me so quickly.”
NHRA officials are investigating the incident.
As soon as I find out if anyone has or has not in fact died at the racetrack, I will update and let you know.
