Pick for the Win – Phoenix

Going into tomorrow’s Cup Series race in Phoenix, I had been leaning toward picking Jimmie Johnson. Historically, this is one of his best tracks. Unfortunately for him, he and his Lowe’s team have struggled this weekend, and will have to fight to earn a good finish.

Jimmie Johnson, “Without testing before the season, it’s just tough to know if the areas you’re working on during the off-season are good. We have a lot of ideas we’re trying to work through now so this weekend we haven’t had the raw speed that we had hoped to have but we’re working in a lot of areas to find speed. So I think in a couple of races from now, we’ll be where we want, but we’re going to have to deal with some tough moments I think, just because we can’t test like we used to in the old days.”

Of course every possibility exists that Johnson can come from a poor starting position to win, as he has done this several times. He starts 28th.

Last week’s surprise winner, Trevor Bayne, was no surprise for me. I picked him on the basis of his Speed Weeks performance leading up to the Daytona 500. He showed great maturity and skill negotiating his way through practice, qualifying and The Duel. In doing so, he gained the trust of the field, with four time Cup Series Champion Jeff Gordon taking the young rookie under his wing, and making Bayne his drafting partner above all others in the field. Trevor Bayne took this maturity, luck and new found trust all the way to the bank to claim his first victory in only his second start. This tied the record of Jamie McMurray, whom also won in his second start, and bested the record set by Jeff Gordon in becoming the youngest winner of The Great American Race. Phoenix however, is another story. Bayne didn’t make a full lap in practice before a brake issue sent him into the wall, destroying his racecar and sending the Daytona 500 Champion to a backup car. I don’t see see Trevor Bayne repeating the success he acheived last week, but I do look to see him perform well in his Wood Brother’s Ford. Look for Bayne to finish on the lead lap, perhaps top 15 and gain yet more trust and experience in the process.

In my opinion, this is KYLE BUSCH‘s race to loose. He has the momentum of winning the Truck Series and Nationwide Series races this weekend, and the track record of success at Phoenix.  Busch achieved this feat last season at Bristol.  In victory lane after leading every lap of Saturday’s Nationwide Series race, Busch was asked if this was a perfect race.  In response, Busch said, “Probably not,” then joked, “See??? I’m not perfect, OK!?”

Even though I predict a solid finish for last week’s winner, some of you may still be looking for an underdog to win.  This week’s Underdog to Watch is REGAN SMITH.  After a very strong Speed Weeks where he and his team showed the racing world that they were every bit as potent as Trevor Bayne, Smith rolls into Phoenix with a strong start to his season, and the cofindence that he is a contender.  To back up this surge of confidence, Smith posted the 5th best qualifiying speed and was strong in practice.

When asked about his qualifying effort, Smith said, “I was surprised. I thought it was a slow lap, to be honest with you. So I’m really pleased with that time. Sometimes when you’re fast it feels slow. We were quick when we unloaded. We were a little off in qualifying trim today so we made some adjustments today and everybody on this Furniture Row Chevy did an awesome job. We’ve been really working hard with this program to get it to this level and I feel like this is the year we can take advantage of it and hopefully that’s what we keep doing.”

One thing is certain for this week’s race.  It is the last for the current configuration, as following the race Phoenix International Raceway will undergo it’s own repaving and reconfiguration with adjustments made to the “dog leg” on the backstretch in the process.  Coming back for the fall race will mean a fresh notebook and an entirely new set of challenges, smack in the middle of the Chase.

UPDATE: Jeff Gordon passed Kyle Busch with 8 laps to go to claim his 83rd victory Sunday in Phoenix. With the win, Gordon moves to 10th on the all time Cup wins list. Kyle Busch misses his second Trifecta, but leaves Phoenix with the Cup Series Points Lead. (Feb. 27)

Super Post: Charlotte, Playing Catch Up

Tony Stewart

Tony Stewart

The past couple of weeks have been very hectic for myself and my family.  We just moved into a new house, so the move, along with my day job has prevented me from devoting the time needed to post new articles to the site.  Thankfully, I am now some what set up in my new office space and can get back to racing.  After a whale of a race in California, the Sprint Cup Series heads home to the hub of the NASCAR world in Charlotte, North Carolina.  The Bank of America 500 is the first night race of the 2010 Chase and is set to be a wild one.  Before we jump into this weekend’s action, let’s take a look back at some of the action from the past two weekends.

Kyle Busch Snags Twelfth Nationwide Win; Danica Wrecks But Runs Strong

In his usual style and in spite of a pit road speeding penalty, Kyle Busch powered his way to his twelfth race win in the CampingWorld.com 300 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California.

Busch, who started from the pole position, brought his No. 18 NOS Energy Drink Toyota to the checkered flag, taking his traditional victory bow to the delight and omnipresent booing of the Cali race crowd.

Busch put it simply in Victory Lane.  “To get No. 12,” Busch said.  “It’s awesome.”

With the early part of the race being relatively caution-free, several late race cautions and restarts challenged Busch and the rest of the field.  One of the biggest wrecks involved Danica Patrick, fresh off her good IndyCar run and now focused fully on her NASCAR career in her No. 7 Tissot/Go Daddy.com Chevrolet.

Patrick was running well and was on the cusp of achieving her goal of a top-15 finish when James Buescher got into her from behind, spinning her and sending her car almost airborne before collecting Ricky Carmichael, who just seems to keep ending up on the short end of the luck stick.

Because of the accident, Patrick ended the race in the 30th position.  But she was most upbeat even after the wreck, talking with the media and explaining her run just like a NASCAR pro.

“I think we’re getting closer.  I really do,” Patrick said after the race.  “We’re going to have a lot of confidence going into Charlotte, I think.” [More at Speedwaymedia.com]

CUP: Stewart Revives Chase Hopes With Victory

Tony Stewart held off Clint Bowyer in a two-lap shootout and won Sunday’s Pepsi MAX 400 atAuto Club Speedway, returning his name to the Chase conversation.

Stewart’s win, coupled with numerous problems experienced by other Chasers, boosted him five positions in the standings to fifth.

Standings leader Jimmie Johnson stayed in front with a third-place run, boosting his point lead over second-place Denny Hamlin to 36 with six races remaining. Kevin Harvick stayed in third place with a seventh-place finish.

Jeff Gordon rallied from a late-race pit-road speeding penalty to finish ninth and jumped a position in points to fourth, 85 points behind Johnson. [More at SpeedTV.com]

Why NASCAR Fans Like Harvick

If lots of NASCAR fans have their way, Kevin Harvick will be the man who kicks Jimmie Johnson off the Sprint Cup pedestal.

Harvick, who is currently third in points, trails Johnson by just 54 ticks – mere peanuts.

And while the current Sprint Cup champ has been dubbed “vanilla,” there’s little chance that Harvick would garner such a moniker.

Rocky road? Maybe.  Vanilla? Never.

Harvick can be a punch-throwing good ol’ boy one minute and a strategic-thinking team owner the next. He has been known to cuss out the media on a bad day, but he has a rep for being always gracious with fans.

He’s a winning driver and a successful businessman.  And, thanks in large part to his presence on Twitter, fans know he’s one of the funniest NASCAR drivers around. [More at NASCAR-ista.com]

Pick for the Win: Bristol Night Race

Ok, this week’s pick for the win could also be the underdog to watch has the opportunity presented to this driver may be impossible to capitalize on, but in my opinion, is totally possible.

Simply put, I have enjoyed watching The Kyle Busch Show so far this weekend as he, Kyle “Rowdy” Busch has dominated the Bristol weekend thus far.  He won the Truck Series race after winning the pole and then, due to unapproved changes, had to start from the back.  He won from last place at Bristol! Come on man!

On Friday night, Busch worked his way to the front of the Nationwide Series race.  In a battle for the lead with Nationwide points leader Brad Keselowski, Busch got would get bumped by Keselowski and then return the favor by dumping Special K a lap later.  Busch would cruz to a record setting 10th victory for the season.  Afterwards, Rowdy saluted the crowd by making exagerated crying signs and then throwing up his hands.

Tonight, Kyle Busch will start mid pack, but I am sure that he will find his way to the front.  He has the opportunity to set yet another record tonight, by becoming the first driver to win in the Truck Series, Nationwide Series, and Cup Series at the same track in the same weekend.

Underdog to Watch: David Gilliland.  He was fast durning practice and strong in qualifying.  This could be a banner night for him and his Front Row Motorsports team.

Don’t forget to come back to The Speedzine tomorrow for Jimmy Joe’s NASCAR Update, post race review.  Enjoy the (Kyle Busch) show!
